Habitat
They live in wetlands, pools, ponds, marshes, swamplands with plenty of vegetation, and at the edge of lagoons. They favour the dawn, and they hide amongst marsh vegetation, which makes them difficult to be seen. They feed on insects, molluscs and seeds. They are an over-wintering, migratory species.  They have only been seen in the marshes in the River Guadalquivir, the salt lagoons in Roquetas de Mar (Almería), the lagoons in El Portil (Huelva), and in Fuente de Piedra (Málaga). They were a reported-sight in Charca de Suárez, in Motril, Granada, in February and March 2012.
They can be seen in Doñana in the pre and post-mating seasons.  They are included in the Red List of the Vertebrates of Andalusia and the National List of Threatened Species.
