Order:
Charadriiformes
Family: Charadridae
Charadrius hiaticula
Ringed Plover / Chorlitejo grande
Maximum size: 19 cm
Habitat
They can be seen near the sea-side or further inland, on beaches, dams,
rivers, lagoons and wetlands. They run along the edges of endorheic-lagoon
enclaves looking for invertebrates to feed themselves, particularly larvae
they find in slimes and the riverbank vegetation.
Like other plover sub-species they gather in small flocks.
Both, males and females, have red beaks with black ends. Young individuals
have a blackish-brownish beak.
They can frequently be seen on the beache, the lagoons or in the paddy-fields.
