Habitat
They can be seen in coastal areas and marshes, as well as in inland,
salt-water lagoons. They nest in coastal wetlands, salt-lakes, dams, rivers,
lagoons, canals and islands. They use the fishing buoys as look-out posts
in order to scan the waters looking for pray. They can sometimes gather
in large flocks.
They feed on fish, invertebrates, crustaceans and insects. They spend
the summer in the peninsula.
In Doñana they flock in large numbers in marshes, in lagoons,
in the banks of the River Guadalquivir, and in the intertidal edge of the
shore.
They are included in the National List of Endangered Species, and their
conservation status is ‘Special Interest’.
