Podiceps
cristatus (Linnaeus, 1758)
Great Crested Grebe / Somormujo lavanco
Maximum size: 60 cm
Habitat
They live in marshlands, lagoons, marshes, dams, harbours,
and bays.
They prefer lagoon areas with semi-saline waters, surrounded
by crops, even urban centres.
They winter in the Iberian Peninsula. They nest and breed in
the south.
Their mating courtship is remarkable as both males and
females display their colourful plumes.
They feed on fish, mollusc and crustaceans. The chicks are
light-coloured and streaked until they reach their
young-adult stage.
