Habitat
They live in marshlands, marshes, shallow lagoons,
paddy-fields, salty-water lagoons in the centre and the south
of Andalusia. They can sporadically be seen in most of the
salty-water wetlands in the south.
In Spain they breed in the east, as well as in Doñana where
they concentrate in great numbers of more than 2,000
individuals, in the hollows in the Centro José A. Valverde and
in the Rocio marsh. They remain in Doñana all through the
year.
They are included in the Red List of the Vertebrates of
Andalusia and of Spain, and their conservation status is ‘in
Danger of Extinction’. They are not threatened of extinction
in their habitat of origin, Africa.
