Maximum size: Between 33 and 41 cm (including their beak which can be
between 7 and 11 cm)
Habitat
They live in wetlands, marshes, sandy beaches, tidal mud-flats, lagoons
and slimy lagoon edges.
They winter in the peninsula but they do not nest here. They are common
in wide-spread sea-side areas around the country, concentrating mainly
in the Bahía de Cádiz, the Marismas del Odiel (Huelva), the
Ría de Arosa (Galicia), the Delta del Ebro (Tarragona) and the Balearic
and Canary Islands (MMA) They can also be found in lagoon areas in the
south and the centre of the Iberian Peninsula.
They can be seen preying in groups constantly plunging their beaks
into the water.
They are included in the National List of Threatened Species, and their
conservation status is ‘Special Interest’.
