Order:
Accipitriformes
Family: Accipitridae
Circus pygargus
Montagu’s Harrier
Size 47 cm long / 97 to115 cm wingspan.
Habitat
They nest in wheat-fields, moorlands and steppes. They feed
on insects, small birds, rodents and reptiles. They migrate
from Africa in March in order to nest and breed. They leave
at mid-August, once their brood becomes young adults. Males
have pale grey plumage and black wingtips, while females are
brown-coloured.
This species is vulnerable to combine harvesters as these
reaping machines destroy their nests made amongst the
cereal-stalks.
They can be seen in the artificially drained, dried-up
marshes and in cereal fields. It
is a deceptively small raptor. They breed successfully in
reserves and woodland boundaries.
