Habitat
They prefer shallow, fresh waters in lakes, lagoons and marshes with
abundant aquatic vegetation. They can be seen in paleartic ecozones (Europe, Asia, north
of the Himalaya foothills, northern Africa, and the northern
and central parts of the Arabian Peninsula).
Pre and post-breeding, trans-Saharan migrating species, in the
Iberian Peninsula as well as the Balearic Islands. They nest in certain
areas in Doñana and the Marismas del Guadalquivir. They can be easily
identified when males show their mating plumage displaying a wide, white
stripe on top of his eye reaching the nape.
