Order: Gallinacea
Family: Phasianidae
Alectoris rufa
Red-legged Partridge / Perdiz roja
Maximum size: 34 cm
Habitat
They live in scrublands in rugged terrain, near lagoons,
wetlands, farmlands, olive groves, on the sides of roads,
paths, etc., marshlands, and salty-water lagoons.
They can be seen areas going from sea-level up to 2,500 m
altitude.
They feed on seeds and plants, although they also consume in
vertebrates, particularly insects.
Tens of thousands die every year as it is considered a
hunting delicacy. They are also used as decoy shoots.
They can be seen in reserves, clear spaces with vegetation
in Iberian Peninsula, but they avoid marshes and lagoons.
